Reporting Breaking News From the Other Side of the World, 2020, Single-channel video, 12 min 54 sec In collaboration with Japanese artist Yoshinori Niwa, this performance documents my act of reading the latest COVID news in Japanese—a language I do not speak—without understanding its content. Over the course of seven days, I present these news broadcasts at various public locations in Vienna, such as Stephansplatz and Schönbrunn Palace, where tourists have vanished due to anti-COVID regulations. The COVID news script was phonetically transcribed into an alphabet I could read, allowing me to deliver the report in a foreign language. The Japanese news is recited in Vienna without an audience, drifting like a ghost in a void, enveloped in the voice of the body. In an age where the internet tightly connects the world, this piece raises questions about how local news from distant regions travels and what it means in a different cultural context.
